Concerns about recreational marijuana

By To the editor:

I attended a recent Matsu borough assembly meeting where the topic of recreational marijuana consumption was presented by Development Services. The lack of knowledge our leadership has on the subject is very concerning. This includes the laws that they are using to plan and develop our community. Prior to the meeting I was also quite ignorant about the law as my attitude was that since I do not partake, it does not affect me. Legalize and tax was the old mindset. That was when the activity was not public, and there was no statistical history of the impact of legalization for recreational use. I have since changed my opinion on the regulation of recreational marijuana and would like to persuade others to see my view.

I have found many news articles on this topic but one that stood out was Anchorage Press, “Part of the Pot” (March, 19). In the article, local dispensary owners commented on the rapid growth and need for refinement. Currently, a new recreational dispensary wishes to open in a residential neighborhood between Wasilla and Palmer. The site shares property lines with 5 residential homes, and no commercial lots. It is in fact, across the street from the school bus barn and near a children’s recreational facility. A recent community petition and online poll shows a substantial negative opinion on the site selection. Prior to legalization, proponents of the industry were promoting an image of responsible, professional stewardship. The Borough Planning Department’s mission statement is: Building quality communities. I believe that these two entities can work together. Think of growing a plant. You want it to grow fast, but not out of control. If you want the most beautiful and healthy plant, occasionally you will have to prune it, or move it to a location with more sunlight or better conditions. It should also be agreeable with the surrounding plants.

Nationwide, laws are changing and the issue of recreational marijuana in residential neighborhoods is building a wall between 2 groups. My interactions with the local government on this particular permit have brought me to the following conclusion. Without proper foresight, I will support the strictest regulations against irresponsible industry growth here in the MatSu and encourage others to do the same. Please join me on Monday, June 3 at 6:00 pm at 350 E. Dahlia Ave, Palmer to oppose the location for this recreational dispensary.

Thank you
