Governor Mike Dunleavy and First Lady Rose Dunleavy are among the many mourning the passing of former Senate President Lyda Green, who passed away peacefully Tuesday in Soldotna. She was 85.
“Lyda was more than a colleague and a neighbor, she was a family friend and I counted on her for sound advice, experience and wisdom throughout my time in public office,” said Governor Dunleavy.
A political newcomer, Senator Green was elected to the Alaska Senate in 1994, defeating incumbent Jalmar M. "Jay" Kerttula, a 22-year Democratic senator, representing the Wasilla area in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Senator Green served fourteen years in the Senate, serving as its president during her final two years in office.
“She was a legislative leader in the creation and passage of some of Alaska’s most important public policies over the past few decades. Our hearts go out to her husband of 62 years Curtis, her three children, Bradley, Kristie, and Shelton, eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren,” said Governor Dunleavy.
She was only the third Alaska woman to serve as Senate president. Her other accomplishments while in the Alaska Senate included leading a bipartisan majority coalition in the Senate, serving five years on the Senate Finance Committee, and being an integral part in helping to write and pass a budget.
Senator Green decided not to run for reelection in 2008 and was replaced by Senator Linda Menard, whose husband Curtis had served in the Senate several years before Green.
Senator Green and her family made Alaska their home for over a half century. She was also involved in numerous community and civic organizations and was a supporter of youth athletics.
The Alaska House Majority issued a statement saying they were deeply saddened at the news of the passing of Senator Green, writing:
“Senator Green's unwavering dedication and influential presence in the Alaska Legislature have left an indelible mark on our state. Her commitment to serving her constituents and the people of Alaska will be remembered for years to come.”
Speaker of the House Cathy Tilton expressed her condolences, stating, “Senator Lyda Green was not only a respected colleague but a true advocate for the people of Alaska. Her tireless efforts and commitment to public service set a standard for all of us. We mourn her loss deeply, and our thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family during this difficult time.”
Governor Dunleavy has ordered that Alaska and the United States flags fly at half-staff at a date that will be announced after consulting with the family of former Senator Lyda Green.
A public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Cards may be sent to the family at 36815 Hakala Dr. Soldotna, AK 99669.
