Congratulations to Teeland Middle School seventh-grader Taia Fagerstrom, this week’s Mat-Su Borough School District Student of the Week.
Fagerstrom spelled “megahertz” correctly to win the 2012 Alaska State Spelling Bee. She competed against more than 140 students statewide. In late May, Taia will represent Alaska in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
The nation’s largest and longest-running spelling bee, the Scripps Bee is administered by the E.W. Scripps Co. in the United States, U.S. Territories, U.S. Department of Defense Schools and internationally. Scripps states the purpose of the Spelling Bee is, according to information from the bee, “to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.”
Superintendent Deena Paramo and the entire Mat-Su Borough School District honor Taia as this week’s MSBSD Student of the Week.
