To the editor:
I attended the Wasilla City Council meeting on July 9. At this meeting, an ordinance was presented to raise the city sales tax 1 percent; half a percent for capital improvements and half a percent for general funds.
There were four major issues within this ordinance — building a new library, which would be the first capital improvement’ putting a second story on the library for rental space; whether a capital improvement fund was needed at all; and finally, does the city require additional revenue to provide city services. All of these are important questions. There were three more council work sessions scheduled to discuss these issues.
After the first of these sessions, a vote was taken to table the ordinance. The vote was 4-1 to table, which essentially killed the ordinance. No more meetings and no more discussion. No chance for revision or compromise. This was an excellent example of council ineptitude and irresponsibility.
The city needs a new library. How will the city fund it if the council will not discuss the issue? Elections are coming Oct 2. Observe your elected council members before voting. The important issue may not be weather they are conservative or liberal, but weather they show up prepared on the issues and ready to do the city’s work.
