The Glenn Highway to Parks Highway off-ramp that takes drivers from Palmer toward Wasilla, and the Parks Highway to Glenn Highway off-ramp from Wasilla toward Palmer will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Thursday, June 5 and Friday, June 6.
To detour around these closures, drivers are advised to continue heading south on the Glenn Highway toward Anchorage, exit at Knik River Access, and re-enter the Glenn Highway headed north.
This detour will add about 10 minutes to your drive, so the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) advises commuters to plan accordingly.
The closures are part of the reconstruction of the Glenn Highway from the Parks Highway to S. Inner Springer Loop, which will change the roadway to a four-lane divided highway including additional lanes, widened shoulders, added turn lanes and frontage roads, signals, illumination, and other traffic safety related improvements.
Work also includes constructing improvements to the South Colleen Street intersection, improving connectivity and access, and constructing a pathway along the Glenn Highway and other roads.
DOT&PF also warns drivers to watch for crews working daily 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., plus intermittent night paving. The work zone speed limit is 45 MPH with double fines for those daring to speed through the area.
Expect flagging and up to 5-minute delays and changing traffic patterns between the Glenn/Parks Interchange and the Outer Springer Loop intersection.
