Cookies and handyman make neighbors the best

Within our small subdivision people take pride in their homes. There is a spirit of camaraderie and neighborliness. The persons most responsible for making our neighborhood a delightful place to live are George and Darlene Herrman.

Darlene, the reserved one of the two, is our Martha Stewart.

Her "cookies of the week" are to die for. Her needlework is a really good thing. While her home-decorating skills demonstrate impeccable taste, her gardening - well, she works among her beautiful flowers in white jeans. Need I say more?

Darlene is a person you would most like to have a cup of tea with, to chat about this and that, to share ideas and to get advice from. About the time you are exhausted or discouraged, she shows up with a plate of cookies and a word of encouragement.

George is very outgoing with a hearty laugh and a big heart. Children flock to him because he always takes the time for them, whether it is to join in a water fight, inspect a newly built fort, eat Hi-Ho sandwiches at a tea party, or soothe bruised feelings.

George thoroughly enjoys helping his neighbors and we "let George do it." He puts his little tractor to good use all year long.

He helps with our landscaping during the summer and keeps our driveways clear of snow in winter.

One day last week, George made wire cages for one neighbor, helped another build a deck, and then, working with another great neighbor, finished my greenhouse. It was 9 p.m. but George still looked fresh. I asked, "Aren't you tired?" He answered with a smile, "No, it's really been a good day!" While that was true for George, the really good day was when they moved into our neighborhood.

I am proud to nominate George and Darlene Herrman as notable neighbors.

The Herrmans were nominated by Hazel Dailey.

Notable Neighbors is an ongoing feature in the Frontiersman. Every Tuesday, we will bring to light some of the fascinating people who show that living near someone is not the only definition of a neighbor.

To submit your Notable Neighbor, please e-mail them to editor@alaska.net or mail them to the Frontiersman, 5751 E. Mayflower Ct., Wasilla, AK, 99654. Suggestions may also be dropped off at the Frontiersman's office, located on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway.
