GLENNALLEN — The Copper Basin 300 title is staying with Allen Moore.
The Two Rivers musher successfully defended his 2013 win, and recorded his record fifth Copper Basin 300 championship when he followed his team into Glennallen Monday afternoon. With a team of 10 dogs, Moore hit the finish line at 2:05 p.m., seven minutes ahead of Nicolas Petit of Girdwood. Moore (who now can claim titles in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2013 and 2014) needed just more than three hours to get between Tolsona, the final checkpoint, and the finish. Petit, the runner-up, finished the final leg in 2:57, four minutes faster than Moore. But he still finished seven minutes behind in the standings.
Moore needed a total of 32 hours and 41 minutes to complete the race.
Gerry Willomitzer, Ben Harper and Travis Beals rounded out the top 5. Willomitzer hit the finish line at 3:23 p.m., 13 minutes ahead of Harper. Beals finished at 3:36 p.m.
As of Frontiersman press time Monday, Brent Sass and Wade Marrs had also finished. Marrs, of Wasilla, placed seventh, reaching Glennallen at 5:18 p.m.
Since Moore won his first Copper Basin title in 2005, only four mushers have won the race. Lance Mackey (2006 and 2009) has two titles. Jeff King (2010) and Jake Berkowitz (2011) have also won the race since 2005.
