WASILLA — Early in the first quarter, a young Wasilla Warriors squad stood with a touchdown lead over a perennial power, the Service Cougars. But as it turned out, the Warriors were standing in the calm before the storm.
Service followed the early Wasilla score with 50 straight points, and ran away with a 57-10 nonconference victory over the Warriors at Service High School Saturday.
Hunter Hongslo scampered free for a 24 yard run with just less than nine minutes left in the first quarter to give the Warriors the lead. But following that touchdown, the Warriors were held off the scoreboard until Carson Reed booted a 40-yard field goal late in the game.
The Service defense held Wasilla to 37 yards rushing and 36 yards passing in the game.
Dominik Norman led Service with 144 yards rushing and four touchdowns in the victory. Xavier Harris added a pair of touchdown passes and a scoring run.
Wasilla entered the 2015 with a very young team. The Warriors return only two starters on offense, and about three on defense. The Warriors continue nonconference play with their first home game of the year Friday. Wasilla hosts East Anchorage at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Field.
