The following is a list of local services and businesses closed due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19. This list will be updated regularly.
Schools:
* The Mat-Su School District has closed all schools to students through at least March 30. In an update March 16, superintendent Dr. Monica Goyette said the closure could be extended.
* University of Alaska spring break was extended an extra week in the UA system. Campus residents will close and students will transition to online education.
City of Palmer:
* The Palmer Library, public restrooms on East Elmwood are closed through at least March 31. The Palmer Depot and MTA Events Center will be closed to all activities April 3.
*City administration offices, such as city hall, remain open by visitors are asked to practice social distancing.
City of Wasilla:
*The Wasilla Public Library, the Wasilla Museum and Visitor Center and the Menard Sports Center are closed until at least April 6.
* City administration offices, such as city hall were closed by city officials as of March 24 until further notice.
* The status of all public meetings are being evaluated.
Mat-Su Borough:
* The borough has canceled or rescheduled all public meetings through March 31. This includes all Mat-Su Borough Assembly, board and commission meetings.
* The borough has closed all of its swimming pools, skating rinks, borough libraries, administration building. Operations and maintenance building, and capital projects building.
* Borough Emergency Services will continue.
* The central landfill is open, but the administration building is closed. Transfer sites will also remain open.
* The borough’s Talkeetna Sewer and Water system will continue to operate, but the facility will be closed.
Services:
* The Mat-Su Health Foundation announced it is closing its building as of March 23 until further notice. The building is home to 13 human services agencies.
Businesses:
* Alaska Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anne Zink announced a mandate March 17. All restaurants, bars and breweries statewide will be closed to dine-in services as of March 18 at 5 p.m.
* MTA announced it is closing its retail lobbies to the public until further notice.
* GCI temporarily closed its Palmer store, but the Wasilla store will remain open as of March 17.
* Three Bears of Alaska announced March 17 that its stores are opening from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. exclusively for those 60 and older Monday through Friday. The stores will be open to the remainder of the general public at 9 a.m.
* Carrs/Safeway is opening its stores on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to seniors, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems.
* Walgreens has changed its store hours to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
* Restaurants including Tailgaters, IHOP and Mat-Su Family Restaurant will be closed until at least April 1.
* Bishop's Attic is closed as of March 20 until further notice.
Event cancelations
* ASAA canceled its high school basketball state tournaments and state cheerleading championships.
* The Cook Inlet Tribal Council canceled its 2020 Native Youth Olympics senior games.
* The Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches canceled its annual senior all-star games.
* The Mat-Su Suey Cup, one of the largest adult hockey tournaments in the Valley, has been canceled.
* The Mat-Su Outdoorsman show has been canceled.
* The Iditarod Trail Committee has canceled its post-race festivities, including the annual banquet.
* Valley Performing Arts has canceled its upcoming productions.
Travel:
* The Alaska Railroad is restricting passenger service March 19-April 30.
