WASILLA — A man who was standing on Knik-Goose Bay Road is in critical condition after a car hit him early Friday morning.
According to a press release from Alaska State Troopers, the accident was reported at 5:22 a.m. Zachary B. Kulchek, 35, of Wasilla, had been driving toward Wasilla in a 2005 Subaru sedan.
At Mile 8.4 Knik-Goose Bay Road, which is near Settlers Bay, he spotted a 2002 Crown Victoria on the side of the road. It was stopped on the fog line with it hazard lights on.
“Kuleck moved out to pass the vehicle and saw a male in dark clothing standing in the road waving his arms. Kuleck was unable to stop in time and his vehicle struck the male,” according to the press release.
The man who was hit, Scott R. Laney, Jr., 26, of Wasilla, was dealt serious injuries. He would have been flown from the scene but high winds prevented helicopter flights. Instead, medics drove him to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage where troopers say his condition was critical as of their press release’s 9:07 a.m. posting time. Kuleck was not hurt.
