Curtis Campbell Menard

Curtis Campbell Menard died in a plane crash on Aug. 9, 2001.

Curtis was born to Dr. Curt and Linda Menard in Milwaukee, Wis., on Sept. 30, 1964. The family moved to Alaska in 1968. Curtis grew up on the family homestead and graduated as president of his class from Wasilla High School in 1982.

Curtis completed his undergraduate education at the University of Santa Clara, and his doctor of dental science degree with high honors from the University of the Pacific in 1988. While at Pacific he served as student body president and received the Student Leadership Award for service, and leadership during his tenure. He practiced as a general dentist before returning to graduate school to complete a two-year residency in orthodontics from the University of Iowa. On his return to Wasilla he has built an orthodontics practice for the last 10 years.

On May 23, 1992, Curtis married Dr. Carole Brodeur. Curtis and Carole then moved to Alaska, where they have been raising their four children. His family described him as a dedicated husband and father who enjoyed flying, hunting, fishing, running and cross-country skiing. He had a strong faith, and his life was an inspiration for all who knew him, the family said.

Curtis was involved with the Rotary Club of Wasilla for many years, and was currently serving as president of the club. He also served as a member on the board of the Valley Crisis Pregnancy Center. Throughout it all he found time to coach his daughter's soccer team this summer.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Carole, and four children, Gabrielle 7, Tanner 6, Harrison 4, and Sullivan 10 months, along with his parents Dr. Curt and Linda Menard, his brother Robert and wife, Gretchen, and their four children, brother Steven, brother Dirk and wife, Alicia, and sister McKenzy. Also, grandfather Curtis C. Menard I, maternal grandmother Genevieve Gouin, as well and many more loving family members.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Wasilla Assembly of God Church. Pastor Larry Kroon will officiate. The burial and a reception will follow at the Menard homestead. Visitation will be on Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Valley Funeral Home in Wasilla from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
