Dale Richard Garrels II
Longtime Alaska resident and self-described “Ole Rogue Redneck”, Dale Garrels II, 76, died April 15, 2021, at Mat-Su Regional Hospital in Palmer.
Called Mr. D by local friends, he was born November 28, 1944, in Abilene, Texas, to Dale and Catherine Garrels. He served his country for eight years in the Air Force. He and his family moved to Alaska from Minnesota in 1974.
In his early years in Alaska, he traveled the world with Alaska International Air. He also worked for Mark Air and had a private pilot’s license. Later, he worked for Nye Ford in Wasilla.
His passions were the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a consummate storyteller, loved people, and never in his life met a stranger. His favorite game was cribbage, and he wouldn’t hesitate to stop whatever he was doing to play a game.
He leaves behind many family and friends who loved him and miss him greatly, including three children and twelve grandchildren.
A celebration of life for Dale will be held in July. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project, Donor Care Center, PO Box 758540, Topeka, KS 66675.
