MEADOW LAKES — More than 60 steel-tip dart players from all over Alaska competed for $5,000 in prize money in the Mat-Su Dart Association’s first Mikeael Edd Goodwin Open last weekend at the Silver Fox Inn.
Before the American Darts Organization (ADO) sanctioned tournament on Friday afternoon, an ADO Cricket National Championship-qualifying event was held. Of the eight women and 18 men competing, Dolores Foote and E. Irene Goodwin, both of Wasilla, and Alvin Arzaga, Dean Fleer and Danny Kelly, of Anchorage, and Charlie Mathis of Wasilla qualified for the championships in Las Vegas in late January 2012 prior to the Fleetwood Memorial Las Vegas Open Dart Tournament.
After the cricket regional at the Silver Fox Inn, nine more events were held.
On Friday night, Draw Doubles 501 first place went to Alvin Arzaga and Danny Kelly of Anchorage.
On Saturday, there were five events. In Men’s Doubles 501, first place went to Charlie Mathis and Ryan McRoberts of Wasilla, Women’s Doubles 501 first place went to Lulu Clark and Debbie Merchant of Wasilla and Palmer respectively. In Men’s Singles Cricket, first place went to Phil “The Big Deal” Wheeler of Juneau.
Women’s Singles Cricket first place went to Lulu Clark, and in Mixed Triples 701 first place went to “The Mean Team” of Dean Fleer and Sean Palmer of Anchorage, and E. Irene Goodwin of Wasilla.
The final three events were on Sunday. Mixed Doubles Cricket first place went to the team of Alvin Arzaga and E. Irene Goodwin, Men’s Singles 501 first place to Alvin Arzaga and Women’s Singles 501 first place to Dolores Foote of Wasilla.
After the tournament, in a drawing of only the first-place winners of the singles and doubles events, the Silver Fox Inn gave away two more trips (including airfare and hotel) to the 34th Fleetwood Memorial Las Vegas Open. The winners were Lulu Clark of Wasilla and Phil Wheeler of Juneau.
Next year’s tournament is Nov. 2-4, 2012, and prize money will increase to $7,000.
