Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

A visitation for Anchorage resident David Leroy Sherbahn Sr., 59, was held Sunday at Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel, 1707 South Bragaw, from 3 to 5 p.m.
The funeral service was conducted Monday at the Family Worship Center, 1711 South Bragaw, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ben F. Sherbahn, Sr. officiating. David Sherbahn Jr., Ricky Sherbahn, Danny Sherbahn, Ben Sherbahn Jr., Ben Sherbahn III and Curt Boatner will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in the Anchorage Memorial Park.
Mr. Sherbahn died Sept. 19, 2001 at Providence Alaska Medical Center. He was born June 30, 1942, in Salem, Ore., and moved to Alaska in September 1956. He graduated from Palmer High School in 1962 and attended Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn., from 1963-1964. He lived in Kotzebue, Wasilla and Anchorage.
Mr. Sherbahn worked for the Anchorage Police Department as a detective from 1967 until his retirement in 1986. He worked from 1986 to 1988 as a Christian school teacher and from 1988 to the present he worked on the North Slope. Most recently he was employed with Purcell Security Services as security supervisor in Prudhoe Bay.
He was a member of the Church of God and enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and spending quality time with family. His family said: "He was kind, gentle and giving to his family and all who knew him. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten."
Mr. Sherbahn is survived by his wife, Virginia Sherbahn; parents, Ben and Myrtle Sherbahn; children, David Sherbahn Jr. and his wife, Tammy, Connie Turner and her husband, Kevin, Danny Sherbahn and his wife, Rory, and Ricky Sherbahn; grandchildren, Shauna, Wesley, Danny Mark, Riley and Sean; siblings, Lois Miller, Ben Sherbahn Jr., Beth Maraman, Keren Turner and Rachel Black; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Ann Boatner; maternal grandparents, David and Mary Sisk; and paternal grandparents, Ben and Goldie Sherbahn.
Arrangements were made by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory.
