The United Way of Mat-Su's annual Day of Caring event was Thursday. Day of Caring is a way to make a difference to those organizations that help so many in the community.

Besides washing vehicles at the Palmer Senior Center, volunteers also planted flowers, painted walls, cleaned up a local park, sorted donations and helped organize and restock emergency supplies for the American Red Cross in the Valley.

More than 17 community nonprofits benefited from Thursday’s outreach event.

Palmer Senior Center van Thursday afternoon as part of the United
Way Day of Caring event. According to Palmer Senior Center's Joe
Bowers the vehicle fleet needed a good cleaning. Bowers said the
center's vans drive more than 1050 miles each day between their 150
daily meals and 110 senior transports. "So cleaning them was not a
top priority." Members with the Palmer Rotary and employees with
the Division of Juvenile justice along with several community
members volunteered their time to detail all 32 Palmer Senior
Center Vans. (ROBERT DeBERRY/Frontiersman)
