Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Dean Clayton McCurdy, 67, of Reserve, Minn., passed away in Gila Regional Medical Center Feb. 8, 2004. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Reserve Community Center, with Reverend Sam Way officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Behrendt, Dean Bruton, Tom Egger, Leroy Larwick, Robert Hicks and John Provo.
Mr. McCurdy was born June 5, 1936, in Pipestown, Minn. He was the son of Ralph and Anne (Knutson) McCurdy. He was married to Beverly Mary Steffes. He is survived by his wife Beverly; daughters Vickie McCurdy of Reserve; Bonnie Schaller and her husband Steve of Taylorsville, Utah; Sarah McCurdy of Reserve; step-son Ervin Riezinstein of Palmer; and four other children in California and Alaska; five grandchildren; four sisters Barbara, Jackie, Vicky and Bonnie all of Pipestone; and numerous other relatives in Alaska and California.
Mr. McCurdy was born and raised in Pipestone and moved to California at the age of 12. In 1977 he moved to Alaska where he lived in Kodiak, Anchorage and Palmer. Mr. McCurdy proudly served his country with the U. S. Marines during the Korean conflict.
During his 21-year residency of Alaska and his six-year residency in New Mexico, he was in remote areas frequently whether hunting, fishing, camping or just driving around enjoying the area. Mr. McCurdy was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and Denver Bronco fan.
Mr. McCurdy will be remembered as a quiet and mellow gentleman. His family and friends were of prime importance to him.
