Dear Editor;

United Way provides a wonderful quick way to find out information for essential social services in Alaska. One can go to the website Alaska 2-1-1 (24/7) or call 2-1-1 on their telephone Monday to Friday (8 AM to 5 PM.)

Alaska 2-1-1- may connect anyone to social agencies giving basic help of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation as well as support for children, seniors and the disabled, mental health services. disaster relief, crisis intervention, counseling, legal and more.

I first heard about this on public radio and have used it to help a friend by dialing on my home telephone.

However I note the following problems: no matter how long one may search, there is NO emergency shelter for men in the Mat-Su Valley; and, Verizon does not support the 2-1-1 service. A person may connect by calling 800-478-2221.

Palmer
