Wasilla loses on the road

ANCHORAGE — The defending 4A state champion Wasilla Warriors suffered their first loss of the 2007-08 season, falling 68-65 to the Dimond Lynx at Dimond High School on Friday.

Dimond took an early 19-15 lead, and led at the end of every quarter.

Travis Thompson led the Lynx with a game-high 17 points.

Tyler Johannes was one of two Wasilla players to hit double digits in scoring, with a team-high 13. Adrese LaVern added 12.

Wasilla fell to 1-1 overall.

Mustangs upset Warriors

KODIAK — The Chugiak Mustangs upset the defending 4A state champions, with a 39-32 win over the Wasilla Warriors during the second day of the Joe Floyd Invitational at Kodiak High School.

The Mustangs climbed to a 14-5 lead during the first eight minutes of play, and held a 20-12 advantage at hafltime.

Junior Jenna Johnson led the Warriors (1-1) with 17 points in the loss. She was the lone Wasilla player to hit double digits.

Third-period hat trick leads Stars past Hawks

SOLDOTNA — Anton Olson notched a hat trick in the third period to lead the Soldotna Stars to an 8-4 nonconference win over the Houston Hawks at the Soldotna Sports Center on Friday.

he Stars had a 4-2 lead entering the final period, but Houston tied the game in the first three minutes of the period on goals by Micah Ranum and Dillon Styers. Olson then went to work, scoring three goals in the final 8:05 for the Stars. Daniel Markstrom also added a third-period goal for Soldotna.

Up until Olson’s eruption, all of Soldotna’s scoring had come from the line of Clayton Glick (two goals, three assists), Brad Duwe (one goal, three assists) and Markstrom (two goals, two assists). Sean Endsley had three assists for SoHi, while Timo Gleason added an assist. Dawson Pearson had the win in goal for Soldotna, which outshot Houston 33-19.

Ranum led the Hawks with two goals in the game. Styers recorded a goal and an assist. Senior Jake Henkel also notched an unassisted tally.

Houston bounced back to post a 5-0 win over Kenai Central on Saturday. Complete statistics were unavailable at press time.

HOMER — A pair of Mat-Su Valley teams skied to third-place finishes at Homer High School’s ‘Last Chance Invitational’ in Homer on Saturday.

Davis Dunlap and Dunedin Strickland helped the Moose to their third-place finish by placing in the top-10 of the event.

Dunlap posted a time of 24 minutes, sixth best in the boys’ race, while Strickland was seventh at 24:09.

Ryan Cunningham (18th) also finished in the top-20 for Palmer.

Mason Wick was the top finisher from the Valley in the boys’ race, placing third with a time of 23:30.

Heidi Doner led the Colony girls’ with a sixth-place finish. Doner crossed the finish line at 27:58.
