PALMER — A pair of defending region champions started off the new season with wins during the Colony Tri swimming and diving meet at the Palmer Pool Saturday.
Colony’s Alex Kessler, the reigning Region III champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke during the three-team, all-Valley meet. Palmer’s Noelle Graham, who won the girls’ 100 butterfly during the region meet in Homer last fall, finished first in the 50 freestyle Saturday.
Both Kessler and Graham used their wins to help their respective squad earn a team title at the tri.
Kessler was one of four Colony swimmers to win a pair of events Saturday. Zach Bloom finished first in the boys’ 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Joseph Anderson captured gold in the boys’ 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Sierra Kinworthy led the Colony girls’ with wins in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Palmer’s Katie Stark was also a multiple winner, with victories in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Graham and Stark helped Palmer finish first in the girls’ team standings with 142 total points. Millie Snelders (200 IM), Samantha Laselle (1-meter dive) and Sarah Hanson (500 freestyle) also recorded individual wins for Palmer.
Anne Sullivan (100 breaststroke) also won for the second-place Colony girls.
John Snelders (50 freestyle), Naephe Huntington (1-meter dive) and Josh Hanson (100 freestyle) won events to help Palmer finish second in the boys’ team standings.
Samantha Belliston (girls’ 200 IM), Jessie Saiki (girls’ 500 freestyle) and Trent Gillson (100 freestyle) led Wasilla with runner-up finishes in their events. Wasilla finished third in both the boys and girls team standings.
The prep swimming and diving season continues with the Homer Invitational, Sept. 6-7 in Homer. The next Valley meet, the Palmer Invitational at the Palmer Pool, is scheduled for Oct. 17-19.
