Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Denis Alan Stringer, 73, died July 26, 2001, from chronic lung disease, at home in Wasilla.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Valley Church of Christ, Mile 36.6 Parks Hwy., with Robert Kuenning officiating. Mr. Stringer's ashes will be scattered in Montana.
Mr. Stringer was born May 12, 1928, in Cooperstown, N.D. He attended schools in Cooperstown and Everett, Wash. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in Guam and the Philippines. He had lived in Wasilla since 1987.
He operated Stringer Paint Service in Everett, Wash., after WWII, and in Great Falls, Montana, from the ‘50s to the ‘80s. He retired in 1996, as a self-employed painter.
He was a member of Valley Church of Christ in Wasilla. His family wrote, "Denis had a wonderful sense of humor. He was the best teacher his children and grandchildren could have asked for. We will miss him."
Survivors are his brother, Milton E. Stringer, and sister, Jean Hunter of Great Falls, Mont.; sister, Irene Hawley of Yorba Linda, Calif.; sons, Stuart and Chris of Montana and Scott of Washington; daughter, Connie Hartgrove of Wasilla; stepdaughters, Bonnie Murrill of Wasilla, Dorrie Hagan of Helena, Mont., Debby Johnson of Battle Mountain, Nev., and Linda Trantham of Albany, Ore.; stepsons, Chuck Redd of Valier, Mont., and Rick Redd of Conrad, Mont.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mat-Su, 3051 E. Palmer-Wasilla Highway, Wasilla 99654.
