WASILLA —The Wasilla Warriors weren’t going to let it happen again.
After playing Kenai to a scoreless tie on Thursday, the Warriors once again found themselves in a similar spot less than 48 hours later, locked in scoreless tie with Soldotna.
But with three minutes left in regulation, Wasilla sophomore Amy Jo Coonrod knocked a Rachel Kennedy cross into the back of the Soldotna net to give the Warriors a 1-0 win over the Stars at Wasilla High School Saturday morning.
“We knew we had to get it in there,” Coonrod said. “(The cross) was perfect. It was right to me.”
Kennedy, who had to leave the game temporarily in the first half after a nasty collision with Soldotna goalkeeper Becca Satathtte, sent a cross from the right side of the field and Coonrod snuck the ball inside the far post to push the Warriors to 8-0-2 overall this season.
“We’ve been putting the cross in the right positions, but we just haven’t been there to finish them off,” Wasilla head coach Amber Craig said. “But that one (Coonrod) just hammered in. It was a pretty goal.”
The victory also extended Wasilla’s shutout streak to eight games.
The Warriors have not allowed an opponent to score in more than 640 minutes of play.
