To the editor,
A closer look into the past political performances of the two candidates for Mayor of the MatSu Borough gives the voters a clear choice. On one hand there is the incumbent, Larry Divilbis, who has served his constituents wisely and conservatively. He has had the courage to use his veto powers over the assembly even when told “We have the votes to override you”. A statement that reeks of exparte communications and vote trading. He stands up for the rights of the people at large rather than particular lobby groups as does the other candidate, Vern Halter.
Halter by contrast ignored the 2012 mandate by voters in his District 7 to keep the mill rate low at 1.37 and shunned the advise of his Fire Board of Supervisors 2015 advisory vote to go to the referendum to raise the mill rate to 2.50. To the dismay of many taxpayers he used a back door move by lobbying assembly members to raise the mill rate to 2.75 — a 105 percent raise. Halter was 5 1⁄2 years into his assembly position before he found a way to help the fire service area, conveniently six month before his bid for Mayor.
I hope that the MatSu voters will elect the best man for the job of Mayor our Mayor Larry DeVilbiss,
Jim Huston
