DeVilbiss, not Halter will keep taxes low

To the editor,

If the voting public could really get to know the mayoral candidates in the upcoming election they would find them on two extremes of the fiscal spectrum. Presiding Mayor DeVilbiss has been a conservative that has used his assembly veto power wisely to reign back the seven member assembly when needed. Vern Halter has made many alliances with members of the assembly to push for mill rate increases in his district 7 above the recommendation of the Fire Board of Supervisors and the Road Board of Supervisors. When a 2013 inflated road levy was recommended to be lowered he ignored cutting the taxes until 2014. When Mayor DeVilbiss threatened a veto of the 2015 mill rate increase for fire services that exceeded the Fire Board of Supervisors recommendations Halter attacked DeVilbiss. Halter was quoted in the April 24 edition of the Frontiersman that “The Mayoral position, by law is to be weak and ceremonial, this is something Mayor DeVilbiss should be mindful of.

As a Valley resident knowing both candidates I trust Mayor DeVilbiss to continue to do the right things to hold down taxes. It scares me to think that the lead dog (Halter) might be running astray with his old team spending our tax dollars freely.

Go be a strong Mayor, we need you Larry.
