PALMER — At approximately 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, a truck driver lost control of their vehicle on Bogard Road near North Earl Drive and Cottonwood Creek.
Randy Newcomb, assistant chief of the West Lakes Fire Department, was on the scene shortly after the incident, helping Matanuska-Susitna Borough hazmat crews clean up diesel from the scene and wave traffic through with pilot cars.
Newcomb said that he didn’t know exactly what happened, but it seemed like the truck “jackknifed” coming down the hill and the fuel tank was somehow punctured.
Newcomb said it’s about three hours of work to clean up the spill and the Department of Environmental Conservation will check it out the following morning to see if any further steps need to be taken.
Newcomb said that everyone there was thankful the diesel didn’t spill into the creek. He credited the crew members for quickly cleaning up the scene.
“They're doing a good job," Newcomb said.
