Dimond sweeps Palmer Relays

PALMER -- The host Palmer girls' placed fifth in the annual Palmer Relays at Palmer High School last weekend.

The Moose finished with 55 total points, nearly 15 points ahead of sixth place Colony. The Palmer girls were the top team from the Valley.

The Dimond Lynx won the girls' team title with 124.5 points.

The Palmer girls' were led by their throwers. The Moose finished second in both the team discus and team shot put.

In the Palmer Relays the distances of each team's three varsity throwers are combined for a total team score.

Palmer had a total of 290-feet and 4 1/2-inches in the discus, just 1 1/2 inches short of first-place Dimond.

Toni Cox registered a career high throw of 116 feet to lead Palmer.

"That puts her among the state's best," Palmer throwing coach Dale Ewart said.

The top throw in the state is 119 feet this season.

This season Cox has added 20 feet in the discus. Cox started the season in the 94-feet range and is now at 116. Cox attributes her improved to confidence and coaching.

"I didn't have confidence," Cox said. "I told coach that I was going to focus on it this year and try to gain. He always knew that I had it in me."

Led by the efforts of Denise Stanley, Palmer had a total of just over 93 feet in the shot put.

Palmer also finished third in the team long jump and fourth in the team triple jump.

Top individuals for the Moose included Sarah Quier who finished third in 100-meter.

Colony had a pair of winners. Stevie McDowell won the 100-meter and Dominique Colberg won the 5-kilometer run.
