Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

I was appalled by (the Mat-Su Borough Assembly’s) uninformed decision to enact an ordinance that would effectively stop the progress of the power plants to be built by Matanuska Electric Association.
This decision was not made with adequate knowledge or public input. It added another layer of unnecessary bureaucracy. Power plants are regulated thoroughly by state and federal government. (State and federal regularory agencies) had not seen your proposed ordinance before your meeting. You were not prepared for the meeting or the decision.
Your decision has caused irreparable damage to MEA members inside the Mat-Su Borough and outside. You have now placed a financial burden on current and future MEA subscribers.
No company wants to spend millions of dollars securing the proper permits to build plants and then have the local assembly change the rules at the last minute. So in essence, what you have done is to set our community up for power failures, high rates and lawsuits.
I would like to acknowledge Assemblyman Robert Wells’ attempt to defer the decision and have the ordinance deferred and sent back to the Borough Planning Commission for review.
I hope your knee-jerk reaction will be remembered at the next election.
