District: Faucets at Houston Middle School showed elevated lead levels

WASILLA — The Mat-Su Borough School District on Monday sent a notice to parents of Houston Middle School students notifying them of elevated lead levels found in two water faucets at the school.

According to the notice, two samples taken from faucets tested elevated lead levels in September 2015. The faucets were replaced and re-tested on Dec. 31, 2015, but one remained above acceptable levels.

"One sample returned levels below the lead action level while the faucet in room 110 of the school returned levels above the action level," read the statement the district sent to parents.

The faucet — located in a science room at the school — was turned off by district staff. According to district spokesperson Catherine Esary, the faucet was not used for drinking water. The district said it has since re-tested the faucet and others in the building, and the water was found to be within prescribed lead levels.

For more information on the notice, the district is asking that people contact the District Operations & Maintenance Department at 864‐2001.
