Following two separate incidents of apparent abduction attempts, the Mat-Su Borough School District has sent out a safety alert to parents.
In two separate incidents last week, several children waiting for buses in the Colony schools area were approached and contacted by a stranger, according to district officials. Both incidents were reported to Alaska State Troopers, and an investigation is underway. Troopers are increasing their patrols of school bus routes and stops.
The district and troopers are asking that if a parent or child has any information concerning these or similar incidents they immediately call troopers at 745-2131.
District officials say they will continue to provide updates to the public as more information becomes available.
"Although we never wish to create alarm, we are committed to providing information that will promote student safety," Mat-Su Borough School District Public Information Specialist Kim Floyd said in a press release.
By working in partnership with local law enforcement agencies and emergency service personnel, Floyd said, the district is striving to keep students safe.
"Most importantly, that partnership also includes our parents. Together, we can better ensure the safety of our children," she said.
Parents are being asked to remind their children about the rules of "Stranger Safety:"
Take the safest route to school or a friend's house.
Try to walk and play with friends, not alone.
Know who a stranger is -- anyone you don't know.
Walk confidently and stay alert to your surroundings.
Never talk to strangers.
Never let a stranger get too close, whether he or she is in a car or walking.
Never take candy, a present, a ride or anything else from a stranger.
If approached by a stranger, shout "NO!" and get away quickly.
Write down and report the vehicle license numbers of people who offer rides or appear to follow you.
Report any incident as soon as possible to any bus driver, teacher, principal or other trusted adult.
Don't wear your name on your clothes or your backpack.
Never tell a stranger your name or address.
