The Alaska Division of Forestry (DOF) Mat-Su Area is issued a Burn Permit Suspension that went into effect this past Saturday morning, May 21 at 6:00 am.
A burn permit suspension temporarily prohibits ALL burn permits, both small- and large-scale. DOF states there is absolutely no burning of burn barrels, debris piles, or lawns.
According to the Division of Forestry website, small campfires less than 3-feet in diameter are still allowed for cooking, warming, or emergency use, but must be in an area with a sufficient fuel break, water nearby, and in attendance until full extinguishment. They must consist of organic materials only.
Many areas already had a High to Very High Fire Danger warning due to the warm temperatures and rather dry conditions. Because of the ongoing dry conditions, much of the Mat-Su has become highly susceptible to debris burns escaping and spreading from their anticipated area.
The burn suspension will remain in effect until fire conditions are alleviated. According to the National Weather Service website, weather conditions are going to remain dry, with highs in the 60s and low 70s with possible scattered showers Tuesday, but back to dry the rest of the week. This is subject to change.
DOF asks that if anyone has burned recently to check the ashes as any abandoned heat sources have an increased likelihood of igniting accidental wildfires.
