Do You Agree with God Regarding Scripture?

The most important question that each of us must answer is, “Do I agree with God?” The prophet Amos asked, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed (Amos 3:3)? We cannot “walk” with God or be in relationship with Him if we do not agree with Him.

Sin and death entered into the world because Adam and Eve answered, “No.” Yehovah told them, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17). The serpent asserts, “You surely will not die!” (Genesis 3:4). They choose to agree with serpent rather than God.

Adam and Eve disagreed with God even after hearing Him speak directly to them. How do we hear God’s voice so that we know what we are agreeing with? The answer is the Holy Bible – the Word of God. The Bible is inerrant (without errors), authoritative and contains all that we need for faith and conduct.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” Yehovah through the Holy Spirit transmitted His truth for us through humans who wrote it down. Just before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed for us. He asked God to “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17).

Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is a celebration of and affirmation of the truth of the scriptures. “The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting” (Psalm 119:160). The apostle James encouraged the early church members to “agree with” scriptures when he told them, “With this the words of the Prophets agree, just as it is written” (Acts 15:15)

The apostle Paul rebuked those who would twist or misrepresent what is written in the Bible. “If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, he is conceited and understands nothing” (1 Timothy 6:3-4).

This is a stinging indictment of modern theology. Too many denominations teach that the scriptures are outdated, are not applicable to modern culture or dismiss them as intolerant. Even worse, they teach that there are “many paths to God.” Paul has even harsher words for these false teachers, “But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed” (Galatians 1:8)!

Ezra, a priest in Israel, stated that his purpose in life was to study, practice and teach God’s Word (Ezra 7:10). By studying, he knew what he was to agree with. By practicing, he demonstrated his agreement. By teaching, he showed love to others by inviting them to know God and walk with Him. May you likewise desire to know, practice and share God’s Word.
