The most important question that each of us must answer is, “Do I agree with God?” The prophet Amos asked, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed (Amos 3:3)? We cannot “walk” with God or be in relationship with Him if we do not agree with Him.
The scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, instruct us not to commit certain acts because they displease God. The Bible calls these actions sin. As the creator, God defines the laws that govern the physical universe. He also defines the laws that govern our relationships with Him and with others.
The law is not a list of “dos and don’ts” given to make our lives difficult as we struggle to obey them. Instead, they inform us how to live in relationship with God and our neighbors. This is why Yeshua stated that the law is summarized in two statements “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mathew 22:36-40). The apostle Paul states that, “love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10).
Sin is our failure to keep God’s law. We must repent of our sins in order to enter into relationship with God. Once we are in relationship with God, we must confess any sins we commit thereafter. Repentance and confession are not only acknowledging what we have done but also agreeing with God regarding the harmfulness of our sins.
The word in Greek that is translated as “repent” is metánoia. It is a compound of two words. Meta which means “to change after being with.” And noiéō which means “to think.” When I repent, I change my mind about what I think of my actions (sins). I now agree with God and His views my actions. The change occurs because I have spent time with God by studying His Word. As a result, I regret deeply my sins and commit to avoid willfully repeating them.
Similarly, the Greek word translated “confess” is homologéō which means, “to voice the same conclusion” to be in full agreement. It is composed of two words. Homoú, which means "together" and légō, that means to "speak to a conclusion." When we confess our sins we not only acknowledge what we have done, but we also affirm that we agree with God. We agree that our sin was wrong, offensive to God and harmful to ourselves and to others.
We must agree with God about the nature and consequences of sin. If we do not, we will never come to repentance and salvation. The Holy Spirit draws you to God and “the kindness of God leads you to repentance” (Romans 2:4)
If we do not agree with God after we are saved, then we will not achieve sanctification. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
