To the editor:
Mr. Sullivan’s lame excuse about having a malfunctioning cell phone that kept him from participating in last week’s meeting when the board voted not to provide funds for the band is insulting to the public. Does Mr. Sullivan honestly believe the public would believe there was not another cell phone or land line that could have been used in place of his malfunctioning phone. If the meeting was so important to Mr. Sullivan he would have found a way to communicate. This is 2009.
Now, after the vote, that did not vote to fund the band trip, Mr. Sullivan wants to re-visit the issue, at his convenience. Oh, by the way, he is in favor of funding the band so he would be the swing vote. My question is, if he was in favor of funding the band why would he not have made an extra effort to make sure his vote was received last week? I believe Mr. Sullivan is grandstanding for himself and could care less about funding for the band.
Mr. Burton and Mr. Sullivan are examples of what we do not need in our schools and on our school board in these trying times. It would be refreshing to just hear the truth and true reasons from these people.
I am not in favor of funding the band. The band, Mr. Burton, should not have accepted the invitation to attend if they did not have the funds to pay for the trip. Sounds like buying a house when you can not afford the mortgage payment.
If people think it is some historical event, let the state pay for them to go. Or let’s see, how about the parents, parents’ and kids’ PFD’s, Sarah checks would work too. It is not the time for the school board to “step up to the plate” to fund an ill-planned , expensive, class trip for a select few students. I am sure the money can be used for a better cause that would benefit more students in the district.
Have nice day.
