Dolores Jean Ewing-Lutz
On Sunday evening, June 28th, our precious mother and friend to many, Dolores Jean Ewing-Lutz, went home to Heaven to meet her personal Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mom was born March 17th, 1930, in Altoona, PA. She married Alfred Rodney Ewing in 1947. Together, they pastored several churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania before being called to the mission field in the mid 1960’s. As they both attended Bible College to better prepare themselves as missionaries, mom told the Lord “I’ll go anywhere in the world, except Alaska!”
On a late July evening in 1969, we boarded an old converted school bus and yes... that’s right... headed for Alaska! (Never tell God you are willing and then put restrictions on it!)
They were led to the Mat-Su Valley and soon were ministering at a new church started in a mobile home owned by Ed and Eleanor Rosevear, Sunny Knik Chapel. In 1974, property for a new church was acquired in the Rainbow area. With the help of Buddy and Elsie Miller and Eldon and Martha Dunkin, the Rainbow Bible Church was built and they pastored there until retirement 25 years later.
Dad passed away in 2005. Mom, after 38 Alaska winters, decided to volunteer at Wycliffe Bible Translators in Florida as a missionary support staff member. While there, she traveled to Mexico and Africa as a Wycliffe missionary.
Returning to Alaska for the summers, she took a job as a tour guide with Princess Tours on the train from Whittier to Talkeetna, sharing her love of Alaska with tourists from around the world. It was on one of these return trips that one seat was open and she was able to sit down. Sitting next to her was a widower from Florida, Jerry Lutz, and for the next 40 minutes, they chatted. Who knew they would be married in the Alaska State Fair parade two years later!
Mom never made any decision without praying about it first. Her home was always open to all and all problems were solved with her standard answer: ”Let’s pray and ask God to take care of it.”
She was the best daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother you could ever ask for. She loved her family with all her heart but she loved Jesus even more.
She is survived by husband Jerry Lutz, sons and daughters Rod and Donnita, Mark, Shell and Cindy, Steve and Tianna, and Tracy, eleven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was greeted in Heaven by husband Rod Ewing Sr and grandsons Jeremy and Tiger.
A special “thank you” to the family of John and Theresa Ballard for their 40 plus years of friendship and love.
Please join us as we celebrate her life August 4th, 7:00PM, at Sunny Knik Chapel, mile 14, KGB road. Pastor Duane Gusinger officiating.
