Don’t elect lobbyists for business

To the editor:

With all of the political drama going on at the national level, this is a good time to remind ourselves that many government decisions that affect us most are made at the local level. The Oct. 1 election is coming up soon, and it is important. Look for candidates who will represent you and your family.

Some Mat-Su Borough Assembly candidates are proud to say “we are open for business,” but without reasonable regulation, business can negatively impact the quality of your life and reduce your property values. Do you want a cellphone tower, a dump, a gravel pit or a coal mine next door?

Some Mat-Su Borough School Board candidates run on an anti-teacher platform or want to privatize our public schools. Do we really want to elect candidates who would destroy our excellent schools?

Having an ax to grind is not a valid reason to run for office, and that’s why I’ll be supporting Jim Sykes and David Cheezem. They are both well informed, they know how to listen, have no hidden agenda, and they care about the people and families they will represent. If the chamber of commerce wants representation, let it hire a lobbyist.
