There was quite the buzz as the popular local donut shop, Donut King, held a ribbon cutting and opening on Thursday at its newest location on the corner of Parks Highway and Palmer-Wasilla Highway.
Owner Cyndy Wahlgren and her crew opened its doors and hungry patrons were able to partake in a free donut and coffee as part of the opening.
“This is a long time coming,” said Wahlgren about the new location.
Adding the 2nd store was Wahlgren’s way of staying ahead of anticipated construction on Main Street in 2024. And having a drive-thru was an added bonus.
“When people are commuting, or in the winter time, people can’t always get to Main Street, so this was a good place and it facilitates the drive-thru.”
Located on Financial Drive, next to Burger King, in the same building that houses Wayland University and military recruiting offices, guests were excited about having another place to grab a delicious bite and a cup of coffee.
Wahlgren expressed excitement about the opening and said that for now it will just be brewed coffee, donuts, tea, but is looking forward to adding chili and her muffins in the near future.
Mayor Glenda Ledford and the Wasilla Chamber of Commerce were all smiles as they were on hand to cut the ribbon and welcome the shop to its newest location. Also on hand was radio station 100.9, who were broadcasting live as part of the festivities.
Donut King will be open 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. at both the Main Street location and the Financial Drive location.
