WASILLA — Warming up for Saturday’s North/South Tournament, Wasilla High hosted a series of dual wrestling matches Friday.

Although inclement weather cancelled a Thursday dual between Palmer and Wasilla on Thursday, the Valley rivals didn’t have to wait long to face each other on the mat. It was a dual that saw Palmer 220-pounder Ben Button turn in the performance of the night in a 44-27 Moose win.

A natural at 220, Button had spent much of the early season wrestling up at heavyweight, but dropped back down Friday to face Wasilla’s Quace Wright, the defending large-schools state champion. And after six minutes of grappling, Button had upset Wright 4-3.

The Palmer-Wasilla dual was one of seven on the evening. The Warriors rebounded from the team loss to Palmer with an 81-0 win over Juneau, which had to forfeit many matches. Wasilla’s JV team gave West Anchorage a contest in a 48-39 loss.

In other duals action, Colony recorded a pair of lopsided wins — 64-9 over Chugiak and 78-9 over West Anchorage. Palmer also wrestled Chugiak, a 39-36 loss.

On Saturday, the Warriors host the North/South Tournament and welcome 15 large-schools teams. Aside from Palmer’s Lancer Smith Memorial, the largest prep tournament in the state, the North/South is important because it gives large-schools teams a chance to see where they stack up against each other before the holiday break, Wasilla head coach Shawn Hayes said earlier in the week.

Due to the Frontiersman’s publication schedule, results of Saturday’s North/South Tournament won’t be included in Sunday’s print edition; however, results and coverage of the tournament finals can be found online at Frontiersman.com/Sports.
