Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wasilla resident Duane Lorenzo Plano, 20, died April 20, 2004, at Valley Hospital in Palmer.
A memorial service was held April 25 at 3 p.m. at Wasilla High School.
Mr. Plano was born March 21, 1984, in Palmer.
He graduated from Wasilla High School in 2002 and attended Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Washington.
Mr. Plano was a lifelong Alaskan. He had worked at Mat-Su Cinema from 2000 to 2001 and at Evangelos Restaurant from 2002 to 2003.
His family wrote, "The love of Duane's life was his daughter Kayleen. He enjoyed spending time with her, tickling her and making her laugh. He was a best friend to his brother and a good friend to many others. His parents loved him dearly and will always be proud of him. Duane had a kind heart and was always ready to help others. His smile was contagious and brightened the lives of everyone around him. He spent summers at his family's gold mine and was operating heavy equipment when he was 12 years old. He enjoyed flying, playing hockey, snowboarding, skateboarding, working on computers and cars and listening to music. He will always be loved and remembered."
Mr. Plano is survived by his daughter, Kayleen Plano; brother, Greg Plano; parents, Dan and Cindy Plano; companion and mother of Duane's daughter, Raylene Murr, all of Wasilla; grandparents, Frank and Shirley Randall and Cynthia Gunter, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial donations may be made to the Advanced Human Relations Class (Suicide Awareness Program), Wasilla High School, 701 E. Bogard Road, Wasilla, Alaska 99654 or the charity of one's choice.
Mr. Plano's ashes will be scattered later and some ashes will be interred at Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland, Oregon.
Arrangements are with Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
