WASILLA —Mat-Su Central Fire Department responded to a call about a fire at Bumpus Ballfields at about 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief John Beebe said that he and his crew arrived on the scene in less than 10 minutes and discovered about one third of a softball dugout and a row of nearby outhouses were burning.

“Nothing too dramatic,” Beebe said.

Beebe said the fire was quick and easy to extinguish, with more smoke and fumes from melted plastic than there were flames. Once the hose started, he said it took less than a minute to snuff out the fire.

“Once you start hitting this stuff, it goes out relatively fast. It took us longer to get here than it did to put it out,” Beebe said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The complex is the home of the Mat-Su Softball Association. Mat-Su Softball canceled games scheduled for Monday night.
