Governor Mike Dunleavy announced at the MTA headquarters on May 1 that MTA plans to build AlCan ONE, the first and only all terrestrial fiber network connecting Alaska to the contiguous United States.
AlCan ONE stands for the Alaska Canada Overland network. MTA currently pays for transport of broadband to Alaska. The new line will decrease the expense of transporting and provide a long term solution to MTA and its members. The construction for AlCan ONE has already begun and will continue through this year into the summer of 2020.
“This is a major step for Alaska that will ensure future capacity requirements for MTA members and can support the continuing growth of broadband across the state of Alaska,” said Michael Burke, CEO of MTA.
Once completed, the all-terrestrial network will have an initial capacity of over 100 terabits per second. MTA plans to expand and increase the capacity for broadband as the demand for higher performing internet capability grows. With AlCan ONE, MTA hopes to provide reliable fiber connection with robust transport connection for decades to come. MTA Fiber Holdings has already contacted Canadian carriers to extend MTA’s reach from North Pole, Alaska through Canada to any major hub in the United States.
