An interesting school board election is in the works in the Mat-Su area. It seems to have drawn comments, including mine, from many areas in the state. How often has any community been fortunate enough to have a long-time Alaska educator as a candidate who has been successful in all professional positions he has held in the field of education? Michael Dunleavy was a dedicated classroom teacher, a fine principal and a highly successful superintendent over a span of 20 years. There is not a single a candidate in this election more knowledgeable about all phases of education than Michael Dunleavy.
Above all, Dunleavy has the best interests of children in mind. He knows the school budget process and is wise in the use of all funding sources. He is also a person of character who is creative in his thinking. In addition, he is his own man — beholden to no individual or group.
He has the courage to make the necessary tough decisions required of board members for the benefit of the students in the Mat-Su schools. He has dedicated his life to improving the education of children. Your school system will be all the better with Dunleavy on the local board.
