Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Longtime Wasilla resident Earl Rossel Campbell died in an automobile accident Sept. 27, 2002. His ashes will be scattered near the Kenai River. A celebration of his life will be at the Palmer Elks Lodge No. 1842 at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10.
Earl was born May 22, 1921, in Augusta, Wis., to Earl Campbell and Zoe Livermore. He graduated high school in 1940. On May 24, 1942, he married Helen Radtke. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in France, Germany and North Africa and was honorably discharged in 1945.
In 1946 he moved the family to Moscow, Idaho, where he attended the University of Idaho and graduated in 1951. The family then moved to Boise, Idaho, and stayed until 1956 when they moved to Salt Lake City. Earl was employed by Safeco Insurance as an insurance underwriter. In 1961 he moved to Denver, Co., working for Industrial Indemnity until moving to Alaska in 1975. He served as vice president of Underwriting for Umialik Insurance Company until his retirement in 1985.
After retirement, he and Helen traveled extensively. He was an active member of the Wasilla Senior Center. He attended yearly class
reunions in Wisconsin and established a scholarship fund in honor of Superintendent of Schools Fergus G. MacLaughlin, who gave him a second chance to get the education that led to his later success in life. He was a member of the Palmer Elks Lodge No. 1842
His family said he will be missed for his contagious smile, his quick wit, loving attitude and caring personality. He was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen; daughter Bonita Prudence and husband, Ted, of Wasilla; son Gene Campbell of Anchorage; sister Jane and husband, William Duncan, of Moses Lake, Wash.; grandson Sean Prudence and wife, April, of Bothell, Washington; granddaughter Stacy Prudence and her companion Elmer Prater of Wasilla; great grandchildren, Chloe McGehee and Ethan Prater; cousin and close friend George and Ruth Dwyer of Eau Claire, Wis.; neighbors and dear friends Ron and Tula Kreger of Wasilla; and many nieces and nephews both in Wisconsin and Washington. He was preceded in death by his daughter Gail in 1946.
