Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Wasilla resident Edward "Eddie" James Cathey died Aug. 19, 2004, at home. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 31, at Cook Inlet Funeral Home and Cremation, 5520 Lake Otis Parkway, Suite 105. Burial took place at 1 p.m. at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
Mr. Cathey was born April 19, 1943, in Newark, N.J., and raised in Richmond Va. He moved to Alaska in 1973, inspired by the beautiful scenery to settle and make the Last Frontier his new home. Mr. Cathey was a disabled veteran and received many medals and pins for his courageous effort.
His family wrote, "Eddie will be remembered for his strength, high expectations and the love and loyalty he had for his family. He loved boxing, fishing, cooking, music and most important to him was spending time with his wife and kids. Mr. Cathey served courageously in Vietnam and walked among us with pride."
Mr. Cathey was preceded in death by his son, Edward James Cathey Jr. He is survived by his mother, Marion Rowlett; brother, Joseph C. Rowlett; sisters, Vanessa Rowlett and Karen and Connie Ragsdale, all of Richmond, Va.; his wife, Mary Lynn "Princess" Cathey; and sons, Arnold 'Sunbug" Cathey, James A. Gainey and Jai and Jacinda Cathey.
