Family Emergency Preparedness Fair planned
This weekend, people can find out how they can better prepare their families for emergencies by attending a free Family Emergency Preparedness Fair at the Palmer Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Palmer Chapel, which is located close to the intersection of the Glenn Highway and Arctic Road.
There will be displays, demonstrations, games, samples and prizes, organizers said.
Some of the displays will focus on communication, home safety, emergency food preservation and storage, cooking in emergency situations, water supply, heating, different kinds of fuel and fuel starters, lighting, first aid and sanitation.
A variety of 72-hour kits and emergency car kits will be on display, and people will be available to talk about how to put together a kit for your own family.
"Once a disaster happens the time to prepare is gone and all you can do is cope. It reminds me of the Scripture, "'If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear,'" said organizer Debbie Brown. "Being prepared sets your mind at ease in knowing that the coping will be much easier.
For more information about the fair, interested people can call the organizers, Jim and Debbie Brown, at 745-5300.
World-class violinist playing at Palmer Adventist Church
The Palmer Adventist Church is inviting people to attend a free Christian concert, featuring Jaime Jorge, a world-class violinist, on Nov. 15 at 10:30 a.m.
According to organizers, the concert will feature music ranging from favorite hymns to contemporary praise songs.
Jorge has played in settings ranging from high school auditoriums to Carnegie Hall. He has played in North, Central and South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Soviet Union, and has released seven albums, five of which have won the prestigious Angel Award for "Instrumental Religious Album of the Year."
In addition to being an accomplished musician, Jorge has an inspiring story to share. Born and raised in communist Cuba, he was offered many opportunities, including offers to study in Moscow with some of the greatest musicians of our time, if only he and his family would renounce their belief in God. They refused.
When Jorge was 10, his family was given the opportunity to leave the country.
In 1996, Jorge left his sophomore year of medical school and a promising medical career to devote himself to music ministry.
The concert will be held at the Palmer Adventist Church, located at the corner of the Glenn Highway and Inner Springer Loop Road.
The concert is free and is designed for people of all ages and denominations. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-seated basis.
