WASILLA — The chapel rosaries are being safely tucked away, the last spelling test has been given, and the final journal prompt is “what are your plans for summer?” The end of the academic year is upon us at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School.
It has been 10 months filled with academic endeavors. The school adopted the Common Core Curriculum and teachers used these standards as the base, then embedded creative pieces that would cumulate with musical plays performed throughout the year.
The content of the shows began with honoring saints on All Saints Day and ended with an encore performance of a play titled “Headlines in History” at the Wasilla Senior Center on May 20. As I observed the students at the Mother’s Day Brunch, I was filled with pride.
The environment of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School has allowed kindergartens to be reading chapter books, second-graders to be proficient in their multiplication facts, fourth- and fifth-graders to be reading “Romeo and Juliet” and moving on to pre-algebra. All students have been taught music theory and their voices continue to grace Friday Masses.
The attainment of these goals was reached by having a close community of teachers, administrators and parents working as a team. Mostly, we attribute our success to our faith.
We begin each morning in a beautiful chapel with students leading the prayers and recitations of the Rosary. This has bonded them with God and each other. We are very grateful for the support that has come through Our Lady of the Lake in Big Lake and St. Michael in Palmer.
In conclusion, we give a heart-filled thank you to Sacred Heart Parish for its patronage and Father Scott for his leadership and guidance. God has blessed us with a fabulous school year.
