What a beautiful day today was! It was one of those days perfect for daydreaming of wetting a line in the river and catching some fresh fish.
Then again, maybe it’s eating so much frozen fish the past few months, coupled by the nice, sunny day that brought on that daydream. There is nothing as tasty as fresh-caught Alaskan salmon and halibut, and fortunately it’s healthy fare, too.
One of the greatest gifts the Alaskan land gives us is the seemingly endless opportunity for healthy living: Fresh fish, incredible summer vegetables and abundance of outdoor activities sure to burn calories and tone muscles. It’s all there for the taking, waiting for us to take advantage of.
I’ve always been a fairly avid fishing fanatic. It’s hard to beat a day out on the river or ocean away from the computer and cell phone. I also enjoy getting out on the 4-wheeler traversing the trails far away from the hustle and bustle of our growing community. Admittedly, I have not taken advantage of the incredible trail system for the healthier alternative of hiking.
Living near the Mat-Su’s most treasured playground of Hatcher Pass, this almost seems sinful. I’m still waiting for the snow and ice to make a walk or hike a little less treacherous, but I’ve made a promise to myself that as soon as the snow is gone, I’m going to take advantage of the bounty Mother Nature has to offer and use the trails practically outside my front door.
In the meantime, I’m back at the gym on a regular schedule, focusing mainly on light weight training and cardio. I’m with Linda, though, in that I find treadmills rather boring, so I don’t spend as much time on it as I probably should. There are some rather unique bikes at the gym that I plan to start using that is supposed to give a realistic biking experience on a variety of courses. I’ll let you know how it is. Until then, stay healthy and focused.
