While Alaska is about as far from Washington, D.C., as one can get, the decision made in Congress can still have a dramatic effect on our daily lives. Take energy policy, for instance. Some political factions inside Washington want to change the tax code so they can impose excessive new burdens on the American energy industry. They want these businesses to pay even higher taxes regardless of the consequences to the U.S. economy.
Alaskans know a fair amount about energy, and with winter upon us we can all appreciate the need for keeping energy prices affordable. Now it is up to our representatives to do what is in the best interest of Alaska, not special-interest groups in Washington.
I certainly hope Sens. Begich and Murkowski will resist any effort from the White House or Congress to assail the U.S. energy sector and alter the existing tax structure.
