WASILLA - A specialized team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded near mile 14 of South Knik Goose Bay Road on Sunday following a report of a suspected pipe bomb on a beach. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to deal with the situation, which Alaska State Trooper Public Information Officer Austin McDaniel said is an incredibly rare occurrence.
“The FBI was contacted, and an EOD team responded and used specialized equipment to render the device inoperable. Once diffused, the remainder of the device was removed by EOD. AST received no bomb threats in conjunction with this incident and have no suspects and no leads at this time,” reads the original dispatch post.
While no charges have yet been brought forward against any individual in relation to the found explosive, charges of Criminal Possession of Explosives or Unlawful Furnishing of Explosives could be brought forward under Alaska Statutes 11.61.240 and 250.
“Guidance from our technical partners at the FBI bomb squad helped confirm that the device was possibly explosive,” wrote McDaniel. “Anytime that a person thinks they have located an explosive device, be sure not to disturb or touch the device, move safely away, and call 911 to report it immediately.”
