WILLOW — Fairbanks musher Molly Yazwinski crossed the finish line at 4:12 p.m. Sunday to claim first place in the Don Bowers Memorial 300 Sled Dog Race. Only six of 13 race entrants finished the race, which was held in cold, snowy conditions in the Susitna Valley.
Yazwinski arrived at the finish line at the Joe Mays cabin nearly 11 hours ahead of second-place Rick Holt of Willow, who got in at 3:10 a.m. Monday morning. Willow’s Justin Savidis was third, Eagle River’s Alan Peck was fourth and Wasilla’s Lou Packer finished fifth.
Iditarod champ wins
Tustumena 200
KENAI PENINSULA — Iditarod and Yukon Quest champion Lance Mackey, of Fairbanks, won the Tustumena 200 Sled Dog Race Sunday, besting Homer’s Bill Steyer by 32 minutes. Judy Currier was third.
Wasilla’s Ryan Redington placed fourth, finishing one hour, 11 minutes behind Mackey. Sheep Mountain’s Anjanette Steer was 10th.
In the junior race, Wasilla teen Wade Marrs claimed the title by besting Travis Beals by just two minutes.
Wood wins in Willow
WILLOW — Chugiak’s Ed Wood won the Earl Norris Open Class Sled Dog Race over the weekend at the Willow Winter Carnival.
Wood’s two-day time of 1 hour, 55 minutes, 39 seconds wast two seconds faster than Courtney Moore of Tanana. Mushers ran the 17-mile course on both Saturday and Sunday.
For the win, Wood received $1,385, while Moore got $1,108 for second. Gary Markley was third.
