MAT-SU — Fall is a perfect time for residents to get out and enjoy some of the activities visitors flock to the area for all summer — excellent hiking, cool mountain bike trips and more.
Hiking opportunities abound during the fall, and often it’s the best time to enjoy the trails. Crisp, cool temperatures invigorate you as you head down the trail, up the mountain or through the woods.
For family friendly hikes in the core area, try Crevasse Moraine. This series of loops is a cross-country skiing hot spot, but before the snow flies it is perfect for a day hike that is very close to home. It’s located off Loma Prieta Drive on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, midway between the two cities.
Mountain bikers can find a lot of opportunities in the Kepler-Bradley (now Matanuska Lakes) area. At this time of year, bikers will often find themselves alone on the trails, giving way to fun exploration of the area.
A little further from the core area, the Talkeetna area has trails galore, as does Denali State Park. While Denali National Park has received some snow already this year, the state park is still snow-free and ready to be explored.
When hiking during the fall in Alaska, make sure you prepare. It’s not uncommon to encounter temperatures below freezing, and the darkness comes earlier in the evening. Dress appropriately, drink plenty of water and make sure others know where you are headed if you go alone.
There are numerous trails throughout the Mat-Su Borough, and maps for many can be found at alaskavisit.com/trails. No matter your experience level, there is a trail for anyone willing to get out and enjoy the autumn.
Another great resource is a locally written blog about hiking in the Mat-Su Valley. Two Moms Who Hike In Alaska has lots of information — through first-person accounts — of trails, equipment and advice. Visit the site at http://twomomswhohikeinalaska.wordpress.com and find out more about great hiking opportunities.
