False alarm draws firefighters to school

WILLOW — An apparent false alarm drew a large contingent of firefighters and medics to Willow Elementary School today.

According to Marvin Rankin, assistant chief with the Willow Fire Department, firefighters were called to the school at around 10:30 a.m. where the fire alarm was going off.

The first person on scene, Rankin said, evacuated the building. Since it's spring break, just one maintenance worker was inside.

Willow, Talkeetna, Houston, West Lakes and Central emergency responders were all sent to the building.

“We did a thorough check of the building and we didn't find anything,” Rankin said. “We did go through the building with a fine-tooth comb.”

He said once it was clear there was no fire, the scene was turned over to Mat-Su Borough School District officials.
